Ages ago, I saw a short documentary on this guy who started out as a small-time filmmaker. Late one night, he was filming a scene about a woman being kidnapped. Someone called the police to report a woman screaming, and the cops arrived in force to find a blindfolded woman being dragged from her home. Things got pretty tense for a bit until the guy finally convinced them that this was a movie shoot and no one was really getting hurt. Anyway, the whole thing was a big enough story that it made the evening news along with some film from the movie. This is where the story gets weird.
The very next day, the guys phone was ringing off the hook with people asking: Will you kidnap me?? I really want to be kidnapped!! Seeing a business opportunity, he said Sure!.why not? And his very profitable business was born. This is how it works:
After paying a substantial fee (he wouldnt say how much), he meets with you and asks you a gazillion questions about your routine, your home life, your work environment etc, etc. You will then be given a window of a week or two for the kidnapping to occur, but you wont know when or how theyre coming. They might break into your house and drag you out of bed, or grab you off the street, or take over your office.you dont know! They take you to an agreed-upon place, hold you for 24 hours and then release you. The whole thing is as real as they can make it and its designed to scare the crap out of you! He said they have never seriously injured anyone, but scrapes and bruises are to be expected! You also have a release word, like say, SASSAFRASS, so that if you start to totally freak out, you can say the word and everyone stops.
Well, I was telling people about this at the theatre the other night and many thought it was ridiculous, or sick, or worse. But a surprising number, mostly women it seemed, said: Dude, where do I sign up?! I totally want to be kidnapped! Personally, I think this is one of the coolest ideas Ive ever heard! I dont think Id want to be kidnapped, but I would love to be a kidnapper. Maybe thats just an actor thing.
So what do you think? Would you want to be a kidnapper or kidnappee? Or is the whole idea weird?
